So, what exactly do everyday leadership investments look like? They’re rather simple, with profound results, if given the appropriate time, energy and focus. If we choose to live on purpose, with purpose, we will ignite the movement we crave – to be a collective power of good for each other.Leadership Investments are:
- Be there. Truly caring about the response to “How are you doing?” Pausing, looking people in the eye and listening to their answer. It’s not about agreeing, disagreeing or judging – it’s about honoring and respecting where we are each at in our journey. It’s not about defending or posturing, it’s about being there and giving each other the gift of time and space.
- Be Real. Encouraging one person each day with a boost of “I know you can do it.” The more we share intentional motivations, the more they are shared and realized. Recently, a Sr. Leader in one of our client companies intentionally shared what he believed to be true for several leaders in our Leadership Development program. One by one, he deposited little motivations in his brief interactions with them. He simply called out “Be Bold. Be Assertive. Be Confident. Be Certain in your Decisions. Be Inspirational to Inspire. Say No to Say Yes”. It took just a purposefully placed moment that resulted in a new belief for each leader. The impact has had a ripple effect and the energy has shifted greatly. What he said was simple. What they heard was “I believe in you. I know can do this.” We need to make more of these deposits in others more frequently – it’s about building the collective good.
- Be present. Closing the laptops, tucking away the phones and engaging in a non-distracted, uninterrupted dialogue. Research tells us it only takes 10 minutes to really connect with someone. How many times are we running so fast that the 10 minutes it could take actually ends up being 60 minutes of interruptions and filler vs. a focused, meaningful, soul-moving conversations? When we don’t know where we’re going, we continue to run in all directions. Stop. Listen. Connect. It’s your choice.
Leadership investment is not a one day thing. And, it’s not a weekend workshop. It’s a choice we make every day, in our own way to demonstrate our own leadership in our little world. To cherish the opportunity, we have when we wake up and create good for the world. It’s about giving to receive – investing in others who will then in turn invest in each other. And, listening to understand, not to reply. Pay attention and your whole world will shift to the very, very good.
And, now, more than ever, we could all use some unexpected very, very good
